Classical Liberal Reading Group

The Timbro classical liberal reading group is part of Timbro’s educational program and has been active since 2015.

“I dread government in the name of science. That is how most tyrannies come in. In every age the men who want us under their thumb…will put forward the particular pretension which the hopes and fears of that age render most potent.C.S. Lewis

This December/January we read a work by C.S. Lewis – the great British writer, scholar, lay theologian, broadcaster, Christian apologist, and bestselling author of Mere Christianity, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, and The Chronicles of Narnia.

The work is The Four Loves.

Organization of sessions etc

Discussion leaders: Daniel Klein and Björn Hasselgren

Meetings: Hybrid. Timbro, Kungsgatan 60, Stockholm, or Google Meet.

In The Four Loves, Lewis examines four varieties of love: affection, the most basic form; friendship, the rarest and perhaps most insightful; Eros, passionate love associated with two people being ‘in love’ with one another; charity, the broadest and most abstract. Through this investigation, readers open themselves to all forms of love.

The book is short. The assigned readings cover the entire work.

In each session, Dan Klein will summarize the reading for the week and discussion will follow.

  • Session 1: Thursday 12 Dec 11 17.30 – 19.00 (CET): Chapters 1 & 2
  • Session 2: Thursday 19 Dec 17.30 – 19.00 (CET): Chapters 3 & 4
  • Session 3: Wednesday 15 Jan 2025 17.30 – 19.00 (CET): Chapters 5 & 6
